The
Rotaract clubs in Bulawayo continue to help the community on a grass root level
in spite of the economic challenges in Zimbabwe.
The clubs in the City of Kings and Queens include the
Rotaract club of Belmont, the Rotaract club of Matopos, the Rotaract club of
Bulawayo, and the Rotaract club of NUST. Paying particular attention to the Rotaract club of
Belmont, the year 2014 was one of the clubs’ proudest moments ever since its
formation. The club partnered with the mother club, the Rotary Club of Belmont,
in their Annual Hope Fountain Marathon which is held every year, with proceeds
going to charity. It was held on the 9th of November 2014.
The club took up various tasks which include, helping
out at water points, cooking, logistics for the marathon, ushering at the
fundraising dinner, amongst other responsibilities. The Rotaract club of Belmont then donated textbooks
for a prize giving day at Komayanga Secondary School near Nkayi. The club also
donated stationery at the Riverside Stimulation School which was also used as
part of the school’s prize giving day gifts for the children.
At Johns Male home renovations the club donated
hardware that included 25 doors and
accessories, thus door handles, paint, electrical supplies, switches,
sockets, electrical cables, florescent lights, and energy savers. The donations
were meant to fit the whole electrical system of the home which was now damaged
and dangerous for the children.
The funds were raised through Car Track which had a
Golf Day fundraiser on the 11th of October 2014 at Bulawayo Golf Club. The
players present also donated some of the hardware as well. The items were
handed over on the 22nd of November. On the 7th of December the Rotaract club of Belmont
held a Christmas party for the children at Johns male Home. The day was full of
fun and laughter as they played games and cooked lunch for the children. The
club donated food and clothes which was contributed by club members.
This year the club of Belmont embarked on the 10 weeks
of service celebrating 10 years of existence. On the 17th of January the club
took part in the blood drive where the public was asked to voluntary donate
blood in Bulawayo and Harare as there was a serious shortage. On the 7th of February the club of Belmont had a
career guidance session at John Male home which was facilitated by rotaractors
from different fields such as medical field, business, and marketing. They then
introduced fortnight computer lessons for all the children both primary and
high school at the home.
The club then took part in the borehole project
initiated by Rotaract Club of Harare West. The club members helped to
coordinate and also travelled to Kezi for the project to get involved at grass
roots level.
On Valentine’s
Day the club showed love to the little children at Isaiah’s home of love. They
were engaged in art, painting, and drawing with the children. After a visit to
the Hearts of Love soup kitchen the Rotaract club of Belmont decided to help by
partnering with Bakers Inn to provide bread for the soup kitchen. The kitchen feeds various people from
different places including destitute, street kids and adults.
Book Donations, Shoe Box, Mpilo Donations, Johns male
Renovation Phase 2, are amongst the projects that the Rotaract clubs of Belmont,
Matopos, Bulawayo, and NUST are currently involved in. “2015 promises
to be a great year of Service above
self”, that is according to the Rotaract club of Belmont President.
