Black Bird: “God has always been calling me into ministry”

Former Star FM radio personality and 2014 Zimbabwe Hip Hop Awards Best female winner, Black Bird put up a top notch performance at the Hope Cyphers held last Saturday at Hope Centre in Bulawayo.

The Gospel Hip Hop event, a first of its kind, was organized by the Hope City Church. Artists who perfomed alongside Black Bird include, ROLX, The Oracle, The Cypher, Metamorphic, Robe, Salt and Light, amongst others. Black Bird left the youths asking for more with her musical ability that has made her the best female hip hop artists in Zimbabwe. The message behind her music motivates, educates, and is full of wisdom and knowledge. A gift that she says is God given. “God has always been calling me into ministry, I thank God that he has brought me into a church where I felt that I can express myself through Hip Hop”, says Black Bird.
Having recently been quoted in the press saying she is currently mentoring the younger generation of girls, in hopes that they will follow her lead and take the male-dominated rap community by storm in the same manner that she has. Black Bird has a vision behind her dreams. “I am about bringing young people to realization that you can love Hip Hop and love dancing but love Jesus at the same time”, she added.

The organizers pointed out the impact of Hip Hop music on most Zimbabwean youths. They highlighted that most youths are into Hip Hop in the wrong way. 16 year olds are engaging in immoral activities such as smoking, consumption of alcohol, drug abuse, sexual intercourse, and clubbing.

“The Hope Cyphers is an event created to accommodate a lot of music lovers, mostly youths, to let them know that God is not only in preaching and in the Church only, but also in music, so that they can enjoy being in church”, says TK one of the organizers.

Award winning Gospel dance group ROLX put up a great show on the dance floor. The group’s admirable dance moves showed the audience why they managed to go and represent the country at the Hip Hop International Competition held in Las Vegas, USA back in 2011. The gospel movement, which has been started by Hope City Church, is one of the few of its kind. “The organizers in collaboration with the church aim to contribute to social development in Bulawayo and Zimbabwe as a whole. It begins by engaging with the youths through positive music that will build them into successful parents and professionals”, says TK, one of the organizers.
